Pope: 'The Church Must Be Courageous'

Vatican City, May 03, 2013 (Zenit.org) Junno Arocho Esteves | 419 hits

During his daily morning Mass today, Pope Francis reflected on the duty of all Christians to pass on the faith. The Mass was attended by the Pontifical Swiss Guard along with their commander, Daniel Rudolf Anrig. Concelebrating with the Pope was Archbishop Claudio Maria Celli, president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Addressing the Swiss Guard, Pope Francis greeted them and thanking them for their service which he called “a beautiful testimony of fidelity to the Church and love for the Pope.” The Swiss Guard will be commemorate the Last Stand of 1527 on May 6th where they will also swear in new recruits. The celebration will remember the countless Swiss Guards who died protecting Pope Clement during the Sacking of Rome.

Contemplating on the readings of the day, the Holy Father emphasized the importance of passing on the gift of faith by all Christians with their lives. The fundamental faith, he said, “is faith in the Risen Jesus, in Jesus who has forgiven our sins through His death and reconciled us with the Father.”

"Transmitting this requires us to be courageous: the courage of transmitting the faith. A sometimes simple courage,” the Pope said.

“I remember - excuse me - a personal story: as a child every Good Friday my grandmother took us to the Procession of Candles and at the end of the procession came the recumbent Christ and my grandmother made us kneel down and told us children, 'Look he is dead, but tomorrow he will be Risen! '. That is how the faith entered: faith in Christ Crucified and Risen. In the history of the Church there have been many, many people who have wanted to blur this strong certainty and speak of a spiritual resurrection. No, Christ is alive.”

The Holy Father went on to say that Christ asks of us the courage to not only proclaim His Resurrection, but also the courage to pray and ask Christ when we are in need.

“We must have the courage to go to Jesus and ask him: 'But you said this, do it! Make the faith grow, make evangelization move forward, help me to solve this problem,” the Pope said. “Do we have this courage in prayer? Or do we pray a little, when we can, spending a bit' of time in prayer? But that courage, that parresia (boldness) even in prayer.”

Drawing the examples of Abraham and Moses who had the courage to negotiate on behalf of others, the Holy Father said that such courage was needed in the Church today.

"When the Church loses courage, the Church enters into a lukewarm atmosphere. The lukewarm, lukewarm Christians, without courage,” he said. “That hurts the Church so much, because this tepid atmosphere draws you inside, and problems arise among us; we no longer have the [...] courage to pray towards heaven, or the courage to proclaim the Gospel. We are lukewarm.”

Pope Francis concluded his homily saying that despite the fact that we may have courage to be involved in our jealousies, envy, careers in order to selfishly move forward, such courage is not good for the Church.

The Church, he said, “must be courageous! We all have to be courageous in prayer, in challenging Jesus!.”

St. Jude's Apostolic Works

For over 60 years, the Canadian Dominican Friars are busy spreading the devotion to the Apostle Saint Jude. During the Fifties, this ministry, which had humble beginnings on Laval Street, in Montreal, moved to the former St. Agnes Irish church, on Saint Denis Street. The Dominicans changed the church into a Shrine and started spreading the devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary and to Saint Jude.

In 2007, because of a decrease in the number of religious personnel available for the ministry, the Dominicans had no other choice but to sell the buildings on Saint Denis Street. The offices of the Saint Jude Apostolic Works were moved to their convent of Saint-Albert-le-Grand, located at 2715 Côte-Saint-Catherine Road, facing the University of Montreal. A «Saint Jude and Rosary Oratory» was set up so that people can continue offering their prayers to God, through the intercession of Saint Jude.

History of the devotion to St. Jude

Saint JudeIt is a very ancient devotion. In fact, if we go back as far as the 12th century, we see the great Saint Bernard honor, in a particular way, a relic of this powerful Apostle. He asked the one, who had protected and helped him so well in many situations, to continue his assistance.

St. Brigid of Sweden (1302-1373) received this advice from the Lord : « Pray Saint Jude with trust because faithful to his name Thaddeus – gentle and kind – he will be swift to help you.». In the sixteenth century, Blessed Colomba of Rietti devoted all her energies to spread his worship.

Nowadays, Saint Jude is honored in almost all the European countries. He has millions of friends in the United States of America, in Martinique, in Guadeloupe and in Nigeria. In Canada, it is the Dominicans who are responsible for spreading the devotion, here at the Saint Jude Oratory. An immense correspondence network links up French and English Canada, some American states, Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Haiti.

Invoked in desperate causes (delicate, difficult, impossible), he is known as the saint of hope. In the letters and prayer intentions that we receive daily, the cries of help and distress alternate with acknowledgments, donations thanksgiving for favors received.

Saint Jude

Who is St. Jude?

According to the evangelists Matthew and Mark, Yehudah, or Jude, brother of James the Minor, was a close relative and friend of Jesus, with whom he lived during his three years of ministry. Jude was one of the twelve Apostles chosen by Jesus among his disciples. Not wanting to confuse him with another Yehudah, Judas Iscariot, Matthew and Mark named him Judas Thaddeus. Thaddeus means abundant, gentle, merciful, kind in Syriac, and courageous in Aramaic. After the Pentecost, he went preaching in Palestine, Arabia, Armenia, Mesopotamia and, along with the Apostle Simon, he evangelised Persia, between 64 and 69 AD, where they were both clubbed to death. Saint Jude is always represented holding a club in his hand, many times mistaken for a walking stick.

Daily prayer to St. Jude

O kind Saint Jude, our faithful intercessor to Jesus, receive the following special intentions : to present them to the Almighty Lord, Root of all good. Above all, grant us an increase of our faith in His love. May each day find us closer in our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Kind Saint Jude, you who has revived hope in our hearts, you whose model merits and life bring us the divine blessings and graces, be our advocate, and lead us to Jesus and Mary. With you, blessed apostle, we give thanks and praise God with all our heart for His innumerable kindnesses. Amen.
